From Norton Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida:
Mademoiselle Hortense Valpinçon was a vivacious, 9-year-old girl when her parents were visited by their close friend, Edgar Degas. Even with a reluctant model and without proper canvas, the genius of the artist’s handling of paint, and ability to capture the essence of his subject is evident in this delightful painting. Degas was a master of portraiture and depicted his subjects with remarkable subtlety. The Norton Museum is honored to exhibit the Portrait of Mlle. Hortense Valpinçon, which has been rarely – if ever – been exhibited in the southeast United States. A reciprocal loan, Portrait or Mlle. Hortense Valpinçon, will be on view in exchange for the iconic masterpiece from the Norton’s collection, Christ in the Garden of Olives (1889) by Paul Gauguin, which is included in the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s exhibition, Delacroix’s Influence: The Rise of Modern Art from Cézanne to van Gogh, from Oct. 18, 2015 to Jan. 10, 2016.
