From Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City:
Shortly after it was completed about 1877, Degas gave this picture to Alexis Rouart and his wife. Rouart was an old friend and former schoolmate, but Degas was even closer to his brother Henri, an amateur painter whose impressive collection of works by Degas included the great "Dancers Practicing at the Bar" . "Dancer Onstage" later passed to Alexis’s son Henri.
